Athens, Promotions, Food Drives — The First Half of May has Been Busy!

We’re only halfway through May and already the dojo is buzzing with plenty of exciting news.

2018 World Kobudo Convention in Athens, Greece

Therien Jiu-Jitsu and Kickboxing is a proud member of the World Kobudo Federation (WKF), an organization that connects martial arts of all styles from around the world. Every couple years, our large martial arts family gathers for a few days of training, competition and friendship. From May 4th to 6th, the 2018 WKF Convention was held in Athens, Greece and Chesterville represented well!

On top of training with elite martial arts masters from dozens of different countries, the team was also treated to stunning martial arts demonstrations in the Kobudomania Show, including a demonstration from Therien Jiu-Jitsu featuring a ju nior team from our Gatineau dojo and demos by Therien Jiu-Jitsu’s most senior team. Kyoshi Norm put on a stunning routine with Nic Laplante helping as a uke and Renshi Daniel was also a uke for Shihan Brian Lacroix.

Congratulations Kyoshi Norm and Sensei Olivia

Also while in Greece, two members of the Chesterville Dojo received distinguished promotions. After testing in front of the WKF’s most senior masters, Kyoshi Norm, who has now been training for over 45 years, earned a rank of 8th degree black belt, representing his extensive knowledge and commitment to the sport. In addition, Olivia Esnard was promoted to the title of Sensei, symbolizing the incredible teaching abilities she’s developed over her years as a senior student.

Fill-a-Bag Food Drive

Finally, while some were away in Greece, other members of the dojo were helping the community by participating in Community Food Share’s Fill-a-Bag Food Drive. In total, this year’s food drive generated a record amount of food donations for the families in our area. A very special thank you to members Mark and Carolyn VanDelst who took the lead on this and coordinated the efforts on behalf of the dojo.

Congratulations, Sempai Brett!

6 hours! That’s how long the black belt test took to complete at the Therien Orleans dojo on April 8th. Seven candidates were up for testing to earn the 1st Degree black belt level, including the Chesterville dojo’s Brett Esnard.

Brett has been a member of our club for more than half of his life. An all around martial artist, on top of all of his jiu-jitsu training, Brett also trains hard in the other programs in Chesterville, including Kickboxing, Kempo Karate, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He not only has an incredible attendance record and is always willing to learn, over the past many years Brett traveled to seminars with instructors from around the world, competed in various competitions, and regularly helps teach kids classes. He’s a true inspiration.

Brett’s martial arts journey began at a young age, when he was quite shy. Over the years, he grew to build confidence, knowledge and a passion for martial arts. He even took the initiative to learn techniques with the Bo, a weapon not part of our regular programs. After many ups and downs, Brett put on an outstanding performance in his black belt exam. He demonstrated a solid understanding of all techniques with power and, although he may have been exhausted, giving up and quitting was never an option. As a result, last Tuesday, Brett was presented with his black belt and earns the title “Sempai” (Japanese for Senior Student).

Congratulations, Sempai Brett!

Our First Week in Russell was Amazing!

Bring-a-Friend Week Was a Blast!!

It’s over and what a great time we had! Bring-a-Friend week invited family and friends to try jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, circuit fitness and brazilian jiu-jitsu and the turnout was excellent. We had a great time meeting new people and showing off what we do and, from the feedback we received, it seems like all of our guests did too.

We’ve always considered ourselves to be a family dojo and fitness centre at Therien Chesterville. Martial arts, especially, is more than just learning how to fight. On top of getting in shape, building confidence, learning discipline and showing respect, coming to the dojo for people every age has to be a fun, positive experience. We love making new friends and building our dojo family and this week’s activities helped us achieve that goal. Thank you to everyone who participated and we hope to see you again soon!!

A few highlights are below. Members can join our private Facebook group to access more…

New Blue, Purple and Brown Belts!

While many relaxed over the long weekend, many senior students from the adult jiu-jitsu class were pushing themselves, working hard and sweating buckets as they completed long belt tests, some lasting 4 hours! As with all hard work and commitment, it paid off for the students who all earned their next belt. Congratulations to everyone for your dedication and commitment to perfection.

Bring-a-Friend Week

We’re extending Family Day to last an entire week!

BJJ Bring-a-Friend NightFamily Day in Ontario is Monday, February 19th this year. We’ll be closed the entire long weekend to ensure everyone can take a much needed break and spend time with their family and friends, but we want to make those good times last even longer!

For the rest of that week, all members from every program are invited to bring family and friends to class with them. All classes will be run regularly (with a few extra surprises) so guests can get a taste of what their friend or relative gets up to every time they step into the dojo. Techniques can also be adjusted for those with injuries or simply have no desire to be thrown. Overall, this will be a fun week and an opportunity for our families to meet yours!

Classes include:

  • Tuesday, February 20th: Jiu-Jitsu (self-defence) – all ages and levels
  • Wednesday, February 21st: Kickboxing, Circuit Training, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)
  • Thursday, February 23rd: Jiu-Jitsu (self-defence) – all ages and levels

We looking forward to meeting everyone!
